Bobtail Insurance
Bobtail insurance is a specialized type of coverage designed for truck drivers, particularly owner-operators and independent contractors, when they are operating their truck without a trailer attached or “bobtailing.” This insurance protects drivers during non-business driving situations, such as when they’re traveling between jobs, returning home after a delivery, or heading to pick up a new load. It covers liability and physical damage that may occur while the truck is being driven without cargo. Bobtail insurance is often required by motor carriers when leasing owner-operators, as it fills the gap left by standard trucking policies that typically only cover the truck when it’s hauling a load.
